Don't call it Social Distancing!
OK, so I know I’m not the first person to raise this issue but I don’t understand why smart people around the world continue to use the phrase “social distancing”. IMHO, a far more appropriate and less anxiety-producing term for this concept is “physical distancing” and not “social distancing”; and that’s just based on my only somewhat useful Sociology degree 😊
Everyone knows we are a social species and people will and need to continue their social interactions, albeit these days more by phone, video, text, email and other apps. There has been a huge spike in sign-ups for videoconferencing and collaboration apps which reinforces the need people have for continued social interaction when physically isolated. There is a subtle implication that Social distancing means also distancing ourselves from social interaction which adds to loneliness. Anyway, I just wanted to get this thought out and get my friends and colleagues to start using the term “physical distancing” instead of “social distancing.”
